Oakland: Letter Writing Night for Marie’s Birthday

Please come and write letters to Marie Mason on the eve of her 51st birthday!
When: Friday, Jan. 25, 6 pm
Where: the Holdout, 2313 San Pablo Ave., Oakland

Marie Mason has been in prison since 2009 and is now in Ft. Worth Texas under harsh conditions.

She was part of the “Green Scare” sweep of indictments and arrests of activists associated with Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front direct actions. Marie was sentenced in 2009 to nearly 22-year prison sentence for two acts of property destruction, the longest of any Green Scare defendant. In 2010 Mason was transferred to a special wing of a Texas prison that has restrictive policies regarding communication.

Mason is a loving mother of two and has been an activist for over 20 years. Like Earth First!’s Judi Bari, she is from a generation of radicals who worked to link the environmental and labor movements by stitching together groups such as Earth First! with unions like the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Marie is also a musician, artist and writer. Some of her art and poems are on her support website: SupportMarieMason.org

The Holdout hosts letter-writing to prisoners nights on a regular basis. There are events focussed on writing to Marie around her birthday this year that are happening around the country and world. Karen Pickett from Earth First! will give a brief update on Marie during the evening.

About Marius Mason

Marius Mason is a long-time activist in the environmental and labor movements. In March 2008, he was arrested by federal authorities for charges related to two acts of property destruction that occurred in 1999 and 2000; no one was injured in either of them. He accepted a plea bargain and was sentenced on February 5, 2009 to just under 22 years. He is now serving the longest sentence of any "Green Scare" prisoner.

The “Green Scare” is the name given to the recent arrests of animal rights and environmental activists who have been charged with acts of economic sabotage. Federal authorities have sought outrageous sentences (often Life in prison) and have publicly and legally labeled the activists as “terrorists” – despite the fact that no one has been killed or injured in any of the acts.

Supporting Marius Mason does not mean agreeing with the actions that he took -- but it does mean opposing the fear-mongering tactics of the federal government and the outrageous sentences they have imposed.
