Marsha P. Johnson painting

painting by Marius Mason

“I’ve been wanting to celebrate Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera’s lives for a long time, as they broke such important ground in both defining trans as a lived identity and for connecting it (and insisting on that connection) to the gay liberation and women’s liberation movements. And to advocate for sex workers to be treated with dignity (and not ignored, despised and exploited by the rest of society) and to struggle for them to control their work and better their conditions. They were part of the start of it all – though there’s still so far to go. Still. So. Far.
